The skin-booster category is quietly responsible for some of the most attractive 'unidentifiable' rejuvenation results in clinic. Here is what they actually do, and where they fit in a serious skin programme.
If you have ever stared at a friend who has clearly returned from a fortnight in the Mediterranean and asked yourself what, exactly, has changed about her face, you have intuited the appeal of skin boosters. They produce a particular quality of glow that the trained eye associates with rest, hydration and youth, but that the untrained eye simply registers as 'she looks well'.
Skin boosters are micro-injections of stabilised hyaluronic acid placed throughout the dermis rather than in any single concentrated area. Unlike dermal fillers, they are not designed to change shape or volume. Unlike Profhilo, they do not aggregate into spreading reservoirs at fixed bio-aesthetic points. They are distributed evenly across the treatment area, where they deeply hydrate the skin from within and support fibroblast activity to gradually improve quality, smoothness and luminosity.
The treatment is delivered as a course of two to three sessions, two to four weeks apart, with maintenance every six months for most patients. The injection technique is uncomfortable but not painful, as we use a fine cannula or short needle and topical anaesthetic to minimise sensation. Patients leave clinic with small surface bumps that resolve within a few hours and occasional mild bruising that resolves within a few days.
Skin boosters are particularly effective for areas where other injectables do not perform well: the neck, the décolletage, the lower face, the perioral region around the mouth, and the back of the hands. They are also a quietly excellent first injectable for patients in their late twenties and early thirties who want to invest in long-term skin quality without committing to muscle-relaxing or volumising treatments.
Where they pair best is with other treatments. We often layer skin boosters with Profhilo for patients who want both even hydration and the structural lifting effect of Profhilo's signature five-point delivery. We sequence them after RF microneedling courses for patients consolidating gains in skin texture. The art, as always, is in the protocol, not the product in isolation.
If you cannot quite articulate what you want from aesthetic treatment but you know you want to look like the most rested, hydrated version of yourself, skin boosters are very often the answer.
