Dermal fillers are one of the most requested, and most misunderstood, treatments in modern aesthetics. Before your first appointment, here is everything you actually need to know.

The word 'filler' does a disservice to what is, in skilled hands, a remarkably precise and nuanced treatment. The term conjures images of overstuffed lips and inflated cheekbones. The reality, when the work is done well, is invisible restoration: volume returned to where time has taken it, contour gently redefined, shadows softened.

Most dermal fillers used in reputable clinics are based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance your body already produces naturally. HA fillers are gel-like, integrate naturally into tissue and, crucially, are reversible. If you dislike the result or experience any complication, an enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves the product quickly and safely. This reversibility is one of the reasons we consider HA fillers the gold standard at Visage.

Results typically last between six and eighteen months, depending on the area treated, the specific product used, and individual metabolism. Areas with more movement, like the lips, metabolise filler faster than more static areas like the tear troughs or temples.

Perhaps the most important question first-time patients ask is: how much is too much? The answer is relative, but a useful rule of thumb is that filler should replace what was there before, not add what was never there. We bring photographs to consultations not because we expect patients to look like their 25-year-old selves again, but because they help us understand the shape and structure we are working to restore.

Side effects are common and temporary: bruising and swelling at injection sites usually resolve within a week. Serious complications, such as vascular occlusion or infection, are rare but real, which is why we will always advocate for highly qualified, experienced injectors over beauticians or unlicensed practitioners.

If you are attending your first consultation at Visage, come with questions. Lots of them. The right practitioner will relish the conversation.
