The body contouring market has exploded. Here is what the science actually supports, and how to choose the right approach for your specific anatomy and goals.

The body contouring category is, frankly, awash with overclaiming. Devices promising to 'eliminate fat cells', 'build muscle like 20,000 sit-ups' and 'reshape your entire silhouette in four sessions' are everywhere. Some of that language is legally questionable. Some is simply wishful thinking. Understanding what these technologies genuinely do, at a cellular level, produces far better outcomes for patients.

EMS (Electromagnetic Muscle Stimulation) works by generating supramaximal muscle contractions, contractions more intense than any voluntary movement the body can produce. A single 30-minute session induces approximately 20,000 contractions in the target muscle group. Over a course of treatments, this produces measurable hypertrophy (muscle growth) and hyperplasia (increased muscle fibre count), typically 16 to 19% muscle mass increase in clinical studies.

What EMS does not do is eliminate subcutaneous fat directly. It can, however, produce a secondary lipolytic effect, where the intense muscle contractions trigger metabolic activity that begins to break down adjacent fat deposits. Combined with injectable fat-dissolving treatments like Aqualyx, or with non-invasive cryolipolysis, the results can be genuinely transformative.

The ideal candidate for EMS body sculpting is not someone looking to lose significant weight. It is someone within a healthy BMI range who exercises regularly but has areas of stubborn, genetically determined fat or muscle weakness that lifestyle alone cannot address. Think flanks that resist core training, or an inner thigh gap that remains stubbornly absent despite otherwise lean body composition.

Nutrition is the multiplier. Patients who maintain adequate protein intake and a modest caloric structure throughout their treatment course consistently outperform those who treat the technology as a substitute for dietary discipline. We discuss this honestly at every body contouring consultation.

The most exciting development in non-surgical body medicine is not any individual device. It is the growing sophistication of combination protocols. At Visage, we design bespoke body programmes that layer complementary technologies alongside IV nutrition support, producing outcomes that would have required surgery just a decade ago.
